Ancient Orange Mead

Andrew came over this morning, and we kicked off a batch of Joe’s Ancient Orange Mead (commonly abbreviated as JAOM), recipe as shown:

  • 17 lbs wildflower honey
  • 6 oranges, sliced
  • 3 cinnamon sticks
  • 4 whole cloves
  • 100 g raisins
  • water to 5 gal
  • Fleishmans bread yeast

We boiled the water prior to use and let it cool slightly prior to pouring into the carboy. Needed to let it cool before pitching the yeast. This isn’t really a typical mead recipe, but apparently (if you read the massive thread in the link from above) this should turn into a great holiday drink!!!

Btw, this yeast activates very quickly… Within hours of pitching the dry yeast, there was very active fermentation.
